BackInTime is a basic open source system backup tool for the Linux platform that makes it easy to create a backup of Linux computer with fewer efforts.

Install BackIn time

BackInTime is not a default application on Linux distributions. So we need to manually install this to do this open terminal and follow correspond with the OS you are using.

Install BackIn time on Ubuntu

Launch ‘Terminal’ from ‘Applications’. and Run the following command to install the utility’s PPA repository.

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:bit-team/stable

To Perform an update.

sudo apt-get update

And Finally, install Back-In-Time

sudo apt-get install backintime-gnome

That’s it! You can launch the utility from ‘Applications’

Install BackIn time on Ubuntu

If you are using Fedora Linux and need to install the BackInTime backup application? If so, launch a terminal session and enter the DNF command

sudo dnf install backintime-qt4

If you’d like to install it on OpenSUSE use the following Zypper command in a terminal window.

sudo zypper install backintime-qt4

On Debian Linux, it is possible to install the application directly from the official software sources.

sudo apt-get install backintime-qt4

Use and Configure BackIn Time

When you first time open the app you’ll see a prompt that says ” Backup time is not configured. would you like to restore a previous configuration.” click no. Then In the main window, locate “where to save snapshots”  and click the browse button next to it

Navigate to your “Home” folder. Then, click “New” and create a folder called “snapshots.”

Using the file browser, select the new “snapshots” folder for the app to use.

Once you’ve set up the backup folder, return to the app’s user interface and locate the “Include” tab. Then, click the “Add folder” button and add /home/username as the folder to backup.

Now select the “Exclude” tab, here select “Add folder” and add the “snapshots” directory we created earlier to save snapshots.

Also Back In Time allows you to configure when your backups are automatically removed. Click “OK” to save the configuration when finished.

Create a Backup Using BackInTime

It’s simple and easy to create a backup using BackInTime, simply open the app.

Inside the app’s UI, locate the “Snapshot” menu at the top of the window and click on it. Then select “take snapshot” to create a new backup.
